Draw Portraits – Measuring

comment Comment Written by Figure Drawing on June 29, 2009 – 9:48 am

Learning the Ideal proportions of the face is always going to be helpful when you are doing portraits. Figure Drawing Proportions should be memorized so that you can work from memory. This video has some tips to get you started.

I Like It:

  • There is a a lot of dialogue that will help a new artist to understand what he or she should be learning.
  • The drawings are very complete – Use the Pause to get a good look.
  • The Author is able to prove his concept while you watch in real time.
  • It’s not too long.

Learning from this:

  • Notice the amount of measuring lines.
  • Get better at being correct in your figure drawing. Especially when it comes to faces.
  • Learn how to include measurements in your sketches.

I suggest you do this exercise a few times to learn the fundamentals. Then go back to looking at references and use the ideas to fix things when they look  lopsided or the wrong size. A mix of reference and memorization is the key to good figure drawing.
